In many ways, To Kill a Mockingbird was an autobiographical book of events from Haper Lee’s childhood. Understanding who this elusive woman is lends to a deeper understanding of her Pulitzer Prize winning novel.
The Early Years of Harper Lee
Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in the small town of Monroeville, Alabama. Her upbringing was similar to Scout Fitch, the main character in her To Kill a Mockingbird.
A defining moment in Lee’s young life is what many believe led to her to pen her popular novel. At the age of five, nine black men were accused of raping two white women. Despite mounting evidence that the women’s stories were doubtful, particularly during later appeals, the men were given a hefty sentence. Many saw the sentences as being motivated by a deep prejudice.
One of Harper’s best childhood friends was the acclaimed author, Truman Capote. The character “Dill” in To Kill a Mockingbird was loosely based on Capote.
Inspired partly by her father, a newspaper editor, state senator, and lawyer, Harper Lee studied law at the University of Alabama and also a year as an exchange student at Oxford University.
Upon moving back to the US from studying in England, she settled in New York City to pursue a career in writing.
