"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of the night....." (Alan Ginsberg, Howl)
In American history, time periods can be characterized by the people that live in them. People's norms and mores, and their overall culture can define a generation. However just as a culture can define a generation, so it is with a counterculture. The Beat Generation was the counterculture movement of the 1950's and early 1960's. The movement made way for the Hippie counterculture movement of the 1960's. This movement involved lots of experimentations with certain drugs, sexuality, and everything that went against the norm of the time. There are many writers that contributed to the Beat movement. During this time period, the writers were unaware that their self-expression would cause a movement that would change America forever.
The original term 'beat generation' was introduced by Jack Kerouac around 1948. He used this term to describe his social circle. In 1952, writer John Clellon Holmes introduced the term to the world when he published the article "This Is The Beat Generation" in The New York Times Magazine. Kerouac used the slang term 'beat' to define him and his peers as "down and out but full of intense conviction." (Kerouac) The movement was centered mainly in North Beach of San Francisco and Greenwich Village of New York City. The main writers of the movement were Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs.
