Clothing-optional travel and vacationing is a niche segment of the travel, leisure and entertainment market. Results from the 2009 National Leisure Travel Monitor, a compilation of a nationally representative survey of 1,590 active travelers, conducted annually by Y Partnership and Yankelovich, Inc. showed that while interest in nude recreation slipped to 10 percent, down 1 percent from 2008, the decline was attributed to economic conditions, generally unfavorable to travel as a whole.

While far from a statement that nude recreation has advanced to the status of a “mainstream” form of travel and leisure, 10 percent is a significant figure indicating quite a number of people are interested in experiencing vacationing in the buff. In the similar survey conducted in 2007, interest among Americans in clothing-optional vacations beat out golf, mountain biking and tennis-themed trips.

Opportunities abound for nude vacationing and travel, running the gamut from domestic boutique-like nudist resorts such as the Terra Cotta Inn, one of the top four resorts in Palm Springs, California, to Caribbean nudist resorts with an International flavor like Club Orient in St. Martin, to nude cruises such as those operated by Austin, Texas based Bare Necessities Tour & Travel.
