Mary-Louise Parker plays Nancy Botwin, a beleaguered suburban widow trying to hold onto a sense of normalcy in her upside down world. Her husband, Judah, dropped dead while out jogging with their youngest son. And to add insult to injury, he wasn’t a genius when it came to investing his money. How is a woman supposed to hang on to her deluxe house, pool, maid, designer clothes, land rover, and community status? By selling pot of course. And Agrestic’s upscale residents are all too eager to buy.
Weeds: The Suburbs Never Seemed This Interesting
The opening song, “Little Boxes,” characterizes the dysfunction inherent in suburban life. While everyone is striving to live the American dream, they inevitably end up as carbon copies of each other. The luxury houses all look the same. The luxury cars are variations on a theme. The kids attend the best schools in order to get into better schools and vie for the same jobs. Even the people start to look the same in this macabre take on the Orwellian theme.
Nancy, with her endless supply of weed, helps her customers cope with this sea of sameness by providing a little relief from the drudgery that has become their lives. In doing this, she opens up chinks in their armor and gives viewers a little glimpse into the underbelly of suburban living. If everyone knew suburbia was this much fun, they’d all move out of the cities.
